My good friend, John Goyette has written a fascinating book entitled, THE POWER OF RETURN (Published by Destiny Image Publishers, Shippensburg, PA 2010), in which he does an in-depth study of 12 major times of spiritual renewal in the nation of Israel. He has carefully studied times of spiritual renewal under such men as Joshua, Samuel, David, Solomon, Asa, Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, Joash, Josiah, Zerubbabel, Ezra and Nehemiah. In each instance, John was able to identify certain spiritual markers that were consistently present in each of these revivals.
I have been very outspoken in my position that the only hope for the survival of our nation is a return to the spiritual principles upon which our nation was founded – we need a revival. In my book, CRY MERCY, I suggest that America is already under the dark shadows of divine judgment which will rapidly increase over a very short period of time. It is a judgment from God that will either bring us to our knees in repentance or to our ruin as a nation. Without a powerful spiritual awakening sweeping the nation, there is literally no future for us. In joining forces with political movements in hopes of turning our nation around, the Body of Christ has abandoned its primary calling choosing now to fight spiritual battles with the arm of flesh.
Thus says the LORD: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD.” (Jeremiah 17:5 ESV)
I am steadfast in my belief that there is no political solution to the turmoil in our land because our problems are not political – they are spiritual and spiritual battles must be won in the spiritual realm.
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5 ESV)
We are constantly dragged into the world’s attitudes and methods and as we are, we take on more and more of the world’s character and strategies; strategies that are doomed to failure. Over and over again our Christian character is overwhelmed by the worldly character whereby we sound less and less like Christ and more and more like the world. I do not point fingers here, for I see it in myself with alarming regularity even though I fight those fleshly tendencies every day. I do not advocate silence in the face of evil. I stand in perfect agreement with Dietrich Bonhoeffer in this matter:
“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless.
Not to speak is to speak.
Not to act is to act.”
We need to confront men with their evil because how else will they repent and be turned. We must call sin what it is and confront sinners with their rebellion. God commands us to warn the wicked of their grave peril before a Holy God. Speak yes, warn yes, and do so in the strongest of terms. But let us not hate and let us not despise. Let us not descend into the pit of slander and name calling. The calling of the believer, urged by the apostle to do the work of the evangelist is to win those who do evil, not destroy them; but to warn them of the judgment of God. We are called to intercede, to stand in the gap, even to cry out for mercy upon the wicked that they might not be destroyed. Jesus came to those who hated Him, those who rejected Him with great malice and vile hearts. They did not receive Him, they did not honor Him, they spit in His face and pulled His beard; they beat Him without mercy. It was for just such as these that He died and cried out, “Father, forgive them!”
My brother in Christ, can we do any less? Do we honor Christ by calling down fire upon our enemies and hurling insults at them. I say we do not. We dishonor Him and in such behaviors we lose sight of our true calling, our great and honorable purpose. I will not be silent before the wickedness of this world. I will speak and I will speak loudly and relentlessly against the idolatry that drives our nation to murder its own children. I will not comply with the demand to celebrate sexual deviance which is abhorrent to God. Paul hungered to go to Rome that he might stand before Caesar and proclaim the gospel to him, to confront him with his sin and call him to repentance. Should we not seek also to stand before those who craft wicked laws that they might turn from their sin and be converted.
However, we cannot only speak – we must act. I asked the Lord, How may I best act to intervene in the downward spiral of our nation? And then, I remembered my friend John Goyette’s book, The Power of Return. One of the most consistent elements present in every spiritual renewal in his study was the arising of a “strong, spiritual leader.” John writes:
“Samuel had been raised in the Tabernacle and arose to give strong, godly leadership to Israel in its time of need. His commitment to prayer and God’s Word was deep. He promised the Israelites, ‘Far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you; but I will instruct young the good and right way.” (1 Samuel 12:23) Prayerful, Word-centered, prophetic leaders like Samuel are instrumental in achieving and maintaining spiritual victories.” (John Goyette, The Power of Return, Destiny Image Publishers, Shippensburg, PA Copyright 2010)
If ever America needed strong, godly leadership — it needs it now. I know there are many who believe Donald Trump is providing that leadership. President Trump’s leadership is strong, but it is a long way from godly. Its a long way from Word-centered. He is more prone to pointing the nation to himself rather than God. He really thinks he can save America and a lot of Americans, even Christians, agree with him. Our nation needs a Gideon who will tear down our idols and pull down the evil strongholds that have been raised up. We need a Josiah that will restore the Word of God to its rightful place of prominence. We need a Jehoshaphat who will proclaim a day of mourning across the land that God might rush to our side. I am committing to a season of earnest, urgent prayer for such a leader to emerge in the nation. .
As I have meditated on these matters the Spirit of God has pressed me to pray for our current leaders. It is possible that the man of God’s choosing might already be in place. I have downloaded and printed a list of every member of our Congress, and all members of the President’s Cabinet and Advisors and I have committed to praying for them EVERY DAY. The list hangs on a hook on my desk. I am not praying for their defeat – I am praying for their salvation. I am not asking that God would destroy them – but that God would save each and every one of them. For those who do not know Christ, I am praying for the Lord to send someone to share the gospel with them and that the Holy Spirit would plow up their hearts to receive His Word. For those who do know Christ, I am praying that a spirit of boldness, a sense of spiritual destiny would arise in them, a sense that they may have been brought to the “kingdom for just such an hour as this.” It is my intention to contact each and everyone of our Senators and Representatives and share the gospel with them, and my commitment to pray for them that they might know Christ and His forgiveness.
I am praying for a sudden, powerful, Spirit driven revival would fall upon all three branches of our Government; that someday I can turn on C-SPAN and see our Senators and Representatives on their faces before God, repenting of their sin, and crying out to God for the land. Do you think me foolish? Then you and I may have a differing view of God. Will you join me? Will you pray and believe for the improbable, the impossible, the unthinkable? I tell you that if we as a nation do not turn back to God and cry mercy – this generation will live to see the destruction of America.
I have provided a link which will allow you to download a complete list of the 116th congress. I challenge us all to abandon the arm of flesh and seek to pull down strongholds and vain imaginations through the spiritual weapons made available to us.
