Guilty As Charged
America is in a bad place today.
We are not in a bad place because the Democrats stole an election or because the Republicans are trying to overturn an election.
America is in a bad place because we have turned our backs on God. We must understand that the turmoil, the chaos, the anger, rage, and animosity roils up out of rebellious hearts who have turned against God and turned upon each other. Every time I start to get sucked into the whole political debate, I realize that it isn’t really a debate–it has become a mindless shouting match empty of listening, devoid of civility, so committed to winning that the only outcome can be a mutual losing. There is no winner in this political cesspool that has emerged. The Holy Spirit always reminds me of what is really going on here in 2020.
Because of our national rejection of God and His Word and because we have exchanged the God of Life for the gods of death and perversion, America is under the Hand of God’s judgment, and if there is no national confession of sin and if we cannot find a heart of repentance, a Holy God will complete his judgment; either by the complete annihilation or subjugation of what was once a great and Godly people or by rendering it completely irrelevant on the world stage; broken, impoverished, and in ruins; not even a shadow of its former greatness.
For every rebellious nation God has a Nebuchadnezzar waiting in the wings. That rumble of impending trouble that all of us sense is nothing other than the hoofbeats of the horsemen of judgment that inevitably ride into the life of every rebel.
Until such time as the American people repent and turn back to God with genuine brokenness on a national scale, Islam will be our Nebuchadnezzar, the Rainbow flag will be our Mark of the Beast, and the intellectual and moral molestation of our children will not only increase, but accelerate, compounding our judgment. Pedophilia and the savage abduction and assault upon our children will continue as if wild beasts have been unleashed upon our innocent ones. The judgment of God will escalate in a cyclical fashion, growing more and more intense as our rebellion hardens until we either repent or are utterly destroyed. Or, so suggests the 26th chapter of Leviticus.
I do not urge Christ-followers to become more nationalistic that we might somehow save the nation. We must become more zealous in extending the Kingdom of Heaven through the faithful proclamation of the gospel – the power of God unto salvation.
The church in large part has abandoned the proclamation of the Good News in favor of a renewed fervor to save America; believing that somehow winning an election can rescue the land. As Christians we must understand that we are not called to save the nation.
We are called to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We are called to speak the righteousness of God into every arena of life.
We are called to demonstrate the principles of the Kingdom of Heaven so that men might hunger for and desire a righteous nation.
We are called to intercede before the Throne of God for mercy and forgiveness for a wicked and perverse people who have rejected God.
My friends, don’t pray that God will Make America Great Again. Pray that God will open our eyes so we can see from what and from what heights we have fallen.
Pray that God will break the collective heart of America, that God will pierce our hearts with deep and profound conviction, even shame for our sin. Pray that the Holy Spirit will rip off the scales of national pride and arrogance that blind us to our own wickedness and shame.
I pray that one day, I will turn on C-SPAN to find our Representatives and Senators on their faces in the halls of Congress, broken and ruined before a Holy God, crying out because of the sins of the nation. I pray for the day our President will call for a national day of prayer and fasting; a day of national repentance across the land.
I pray that the cry of more than 60,000,000 aborted babies will reach the ears of doctors and nurses all across our land; that God will open their eyes to see the blood of the innocents that drips from their hands. I pray that Planned Parenthood will see the shame they have brought upon our land and the violence they have perpetrated upon women and weep in deep contrition from a broken heart.
There is no defense to be made for America for we are guilty as charged.
I have grown weary of the ministry of complaint and condemnation, awakening every day in hopes of finding my political enemies have fallen. I hunger for the heart of Moses who stood in the midst of the storm of God’s wrath, pleading for a guilty people that God would show mercy and not destroy them. God had raised up Israel for a grand purpose. He had brought them out of Egypt to make them a great nation. His desire was that they would be a nation of priestly kings, the showcase of God’s great glory. Moses pleaded with God, for His own Name’s sake that He would not destroy Israel but spare them for His own glory. I stand with many who believe America also was raised up by the Hand of God to be a shining light of His Glory. I believe America was raised up as that “shining city on a hill” that the world would have a clear template after which to model their own nations. Like Israel though, America has turned to other gods. We have rejected His life giving principles in favor of the precepts of darkness and that darkness now threatens to envelop us.
Every day I acknowledge the blood guilt of this nation before God. We are a generation that has murdered its babies, sexualized its children, perverted the marriage bed, ransacked the sanctity of the family. We are guilty of grave injustices and gross inhumanity, while our avarice drives us deeper and deeper into the idolatry of “things.”
Fathers have abdicated their role as the spiritual head of the family. Called to be the Gatekeeper, protector of the family from all things wicked, in so many cases American fathers have become the Gateway, opening the door to our homes for perversion and godlessness. Rock stars have become our preachers and sports arenas have become our churches. Movie stars are now our statesmen and the government has become our provider.
The Koran now sits in church pews alongside the Holy Scriptures and Buddhist Peace Poles stand in the church courtyard. The judgments of men have now risen to prominence over the authority of Scripture and clergymen now proclaim the words of the Bible to be archaic, sexist, misogynistic ramblings of old white men that must be reinterpreted for a more enlightened generation. Mother Earth is revered now over Father God, while mystical and cultic practices are woven into the fabric of church theology. All roads lead to Heaven, all religions are equal, and all men worship the same god, regardless of what his/her name is.
Our nation dances around the golden calf of secular humanism, declaring to a watching universe that we worship a god created in our own image. We have forgotten the warning of those tablets which Moses held in his hands on Sinai, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” It was for that precise sin that God would have destroyed Israel in the wastelands around the mountain had it not been for Moses, their intercessor.
For these sins and so many more, we are guilty.
