I expect to lose a lot of friends in the next few minutes. However, I have weighed these thoughts for many days now and I am constrained to speak what God has spoken to me.
God often uses men, bad men, evil men, men of questionable character, weak men, insignificant men, men that none of us might have chosen––but men at any rate––to accomplish His purposes. He does this because He is God and He knows exactly how to bring about a desired result. His methods and choices are often perplexing to us, but as He says, His thoughts are higher than our thoughts and His ways are higher than our ways. That being said, I offer a simple proposition:
God did not allow Donald Trump to be elected President to save America. I believe God’s purpose for the presidency of Donald Trump was to expose America.
Democrats and progressives, Republicans, conservatives, and yes – even the church. We have been exposed for what we really are. And my friend, we are ugly; and ugly goes all the way to the bone. The events of the past four years and especially the past few weeks have been nothing less than an ugly revelation, layer by layer, of the heart of America.
We are murderers – we murder our own children.
We are whoremongers -our nation is sold out to perverted sexuality.
We are blasphemers – we have rejected God’s Word and mocked His name (Can I get an Awoman?)
And, we are idolators. When Barack Obama was elected, many called him a modern Messiah. Those of us who didn’t like him were horrified; “Blasphemy!” we cried. However, those same folks haven’t minded declaring Donald Trump as a man who would save America. Donald Trump did not elevate himself to the position of savior – men did that and did him a great disservice. Sadly, his ego has been only too happy to embrace that elevation.
In the barrenness of their own hearts, the Israelites at the base of Mount Sinai raised up a golden calf, and while they danced around it declared, “Behold the God who led us out of Egypt!” God was angry with them, destroying both their idol and many of their persons. My friends, God will not share His glory with any man and I believe that many in America and in the church have attributed much of what belongs to God to Donald Trump.
And, we are mean. The meanness of America has been laid bare. Now, I am a conservative but you need to understand that I am not speaking only of the meanness of progressives or liberals. I am heartbroken at the mean spirited canon fire coming from the right, and most disappointing of all––from the church.
Are there no peacemakers who remain?. If there are, they seem to be in hiding. Everyone has chosen their side and have leapt into battle positions and we have set our hearts to destroying one another.
I began in 2017 pleading my case: THERE IS NO POLITICAL SOLUTION TO WHAT AILS AMERICA. OUR PROBLEMS ARE NOT POLITICAL – THEY ARE SPIRITUAL. (I even wrote a book about it: CRY MERCY). We cannot defeat spiritual enemies with political weapons. The enemies of America are not political parties or international entities. America is being destroyed from within, suffering the consequences of our own sins. The siege at the Capitol last week is the perfect example of fighting the wrong battle with the wrong weapons The Word of God declares that “the arm of flesh will fail.” The flesh fails because the battle is spiritual and it cannot be won with weapons of flesh.
Personally, I don’t care for Nancy Pelosi, or Chuck Schumer, or for that matter, President-elect Joe Biden. I abhor many of their public policies and believe that their administration will drive us further from seeking God. For the past four years they and others have been solely focused on DONALD TRUMP. They have not done what they were elected to do. They have not governed. They have spent millions upon millions of dollars of tax-payer funds in a personal vendetta against Donald Trump. They have done nothing that truly addresses the needs of the American people. Nothing.
But quite frankly tonight, I am acutely aware that Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, or Joe Biden are not our enemy. We have become our own worst enemy, and our sin will bring about our destruction as a nation.
Many might say that the 2016 election brought out the worst in the Democratic party. I would say that ultimately, that the election of Donald Trump has brought out the worst in all of us. We are naked before the world. While many would argue that Donald Trump has been a champion of the faith, the truth is that we are not more spiritual, but more carnal at this hour. Our wicked national heart is exposed and the rot of our sin stinketh.
I propose to you that this is precisely why God allowed Donald Trump to be elected as President.
Sometimes when a dangerous, even deadly infection is present in our body, the wound needs to be lanced so that all that putrid puss, hidden beneath the scab can run out. It is painful, it is disgusting, it stinks––but it must be done to preserve life. America is in need of radical surgery. In fact, we desperately need a heart transplant. In Ezekiel 36 the Lord says through his prophet, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
Someone asked me today: “What should we do as the church in light of this national crisis?” My answer: “We need to do what the church is called to do––we must preach the gospel, for it is the power of God unto salvation.” Only the Gospel of Christ can shatter a stone hardened heart and transform it to a heart of flesh, that is not only tender toward one another, but toward God as well.
Revelation 3:17 says this to the church at Laodicea, which many reckon to be the church of this generation: “For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.”
Yes, I do in fact believe that the sovereign God of the Universe raised up Donald J. Trump to be the President of the United States. However, I don’t believe he was seated in the Oval Office to save America, but that his tenure would expose the sin of America, to strip us naked so that we could clearly see what we have become. I am praying now that seeing our nakedness we might bow in shame and contrition before the One who can in fact save us, the One who can transform our hearts, the One who can cover us with garments of righteousness.
“Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Acts 2:37-39
