Restored Greatness, or Fresh Mercy?
(Isaiah 31:1-3 ESV)
Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help
and rely on horses,
who trust in chariots because they are many
and in horsemen because they are very strong,
but do not look to the Holy One of Israel
or consult the Lord!
2 And yet he is wise and brings disaster;
he does not call back his words,
but will arise against the house of the evildoers
and against the helpers of those who work iniquity.
3 The Egyptians are man, and not God,
and their horses are flesh, and not spirit.
When the Lord stretches out his hand,
the helper will stumble, and he who is helped will fall,
and they will all perish together.
More than 100 Christian leaders met with the President this last week and if what I’m hearing them say is accurate, the only thing that is going to save America is the Second Coming of Donald Trump. The attendees spoke with great gravity of President Trump’s “prophetic warning,” which in short was if you don’t elect Republicans in November and me in 2020 America is doomed; only Donald Trump and the Republican Party can save America.
Please note that the words I write here do not suggest condemnation of or support for President Trump. Rather, mine is in great disappointment in a church which is increasingly looking to the arm of flesh for deliverance. Despite our own scriptures which warn us,
“Thus says the Lord: Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. (Jeremiah 17:5 ESV)
I know, I know the current prophetic hype surrounding our President is that he is a modern day Cyrus who has been put into power by God to rebuild America. If you’re going to follow that comparison, please be careful to remember that Cyrus came into the picture only after the complete destruction of the nation of Israel, only after their cities had been laid waste, only after the Temple had been pulled down, and only after they had spent 70 years in exile because of their wickedness and rebellion.
Cyrus May Not Be the Best Symbol
Cyrus did not appear as Israel’s rebuilder until after the discipline of God had been fully administered. Of course, our American version completely omits any judgment before our deliverer comes riding into the picture. Believe me, America has yet to feel the full weight of God’s judgment for her sin.
I am amazed at the number of godly men who talk about rescuing America, saving Christians from persecution, restoring the greatness of the land; and who in complete unanimity believe that God has put Donald Trump into office to save us from destruction. Yet there is almost no conversation about the need for confession and repentance from sin. I listened this morning to three different Christian talk shows, all hosting so called “prophetic voices” declaring that Cyrus is at the helm and if we will just get to polls and keep him there, he will make America great again. There was no acknowledgment of the great sin of the nation and the real possibility that we are living in the shadow of the judgment of God.
Cyrus was not given to Israel to deliver Israel from destruction. Cyrus was raised up because the discipline of God had broken them; they had already returned to God. God’s judgment had broken their proud hearts and in great humility and contrition they begged God for restoration. It was only then that God raised up Cyrus.
Even Cyrus Cannot Withstand the Judgment of God
I am declaring to you that the Judgment of God is about to fall upon the nation and break us to pieces because of abortion, because of sexual perversion, because of spiritual apostasy, because of the destruction of the family, racism, blasphemy, and idolatry and there is no “Cyrus” that can turn away that judgment. Those things are not policy driven, they are demon driven. Changing public policy will not affect the denomic grip on America in the least bit. If we do not break the demonic powers and challenge the demonic principalities we will in fact come under the judgment of God. Cyrus in the Oval Office cannot turn away the wrath of God against us, only the nation upon its knees will do that.
Instead of rallying around a political platform, the church must rally around the altar, on our knees repenting first of our own apostasy and praying that God would break the hard heart of our nation, bringing our entire population into humble contrition before a Holy God and full agreement with God about our sin. We have to choose between a political referendum or a nation in revival.
In 2008 when Barack Obama became President, many dared call him a savior. He was not. In 2018 millions are looking to Donald Trump to make America great again. He won’t. Our problems are not political, they are spiritual. The arm of flesh cannot prevail against spiritual powers and principalities. I believe our entire political system is demon possessed. Victory over demonic forces are not won by forming alliances with them, but by taking authority over them in the Name of Jesus Christ.
I am not singing the chorus that much of the rest of the choir is singing, “Make America Great Again.” I am singing the chorus, “Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on me, Melt me, mold me, Fill me, use me.”
I am not praying the God will restore America to some former greatness. Rather, I am praying that He will shatter our pride, cause the blinders to fall from our eyes so that we can see the great iniquity that rests in our hearts. I am praying that Americans will be horrified by the wickedness into which we have descended so that we will run to God in repentance; that in recognizing how deep is our sin that we will turn to God, crying for mercy! It’s our only hope.
