"Faithful are the wounds of a friend
“Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but profuse the kisses of an enemy.” Proverbs 27:6
It fell upon my shoulders today to speak words to a friend that are very hurtful. I am sitting here in the quiet of my study weeping for my friend; yet, perhaps weeping for myself as well for the words I am required to speak wound me as well. It occurs to me, we should never inflict such wounds that do not harm us as well, for in so doing we would utterly lack mercy.
There were no shortage of volunteers for the task, but I would permit none of them to speak, for they were far too eager. Instead, I held the awful task as my own because I dread it so much that I could not do the deed but through sad and bitter tears. From time to time, each of us must hear things about ourselves we would rather not hear – yet I trust always that the wound would come from a friend who loves, rather than from an enemy who leaps upon the opportunity.
