Planting the Seeds of Renewal

Jesus Wants to Kill You

I am tired of apologizing for Jesus. I don’t want a “nicer” Jesus. I want the One who adorns the pages of the Holy Scriptures. I don’t want a politically correct Jesus, a tolerant Jesus, a passive Jesus. I long for the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the God/Man who made a whip out of strands of rope, offending the money changers as He drove them from the Temple.  I long for the Jesus who stood toe to toe with the hypocrites in the synagogues naming them as vipers and sons of their father, the Devil. They carried the scrolls under their arms, but did not understand what was contained in them.  I don’t know who this sissy is that keeps trying to pass himself off as Jesus, but I don’t like him.

I’m wearied by those whose only contribution to the gospel is to make Jesus nicer; to normalize Him, make him less strident, more accepting, a more accommodating Savior.

I find the spineless pansy of a Messiah that men cling to, quite frankly nauseating. He is more concerned about my feelings than His Father’s glory, and is more about my petty needs than His Father’s business.

This Jesus, comfortable with human perversion, embracing human sinfulness, and wholly focused on the happiness of man, bears no resemblance at all to the Jesus predicted in the Old Testament and revealed in the pages of the New Testament. He is not real.  He is a concoction of foolish men, bent on satisfying their own putrid lusts, and weary of the condemnation of their sin by the righteous and holy God.  He is not the God who created man in His own image. He is a god created in the likeness of men, no better, nor any more real, than the vile and vulgar gods of Greek mythology.

He never condemns, nor does he ever correct. This Jesus does not transform men into new creatures, but lovingly affirms the wretched creatures we are. He is not a Savior, He is an enabler. His verdicts are not final, his principles are not absolute. Men sit in judgment of his statutes. We edit His Word to soothe the wicked soul, to conform the Scriptures to the culture rather than to bend the culture around the template of Canon, the rod of measurement.

No, this Jesus simply does not exist. He is a figment of twisted imaginations that have exalted themselves against the very nature of God. He is not God, he is not the Son of God. He is an idol, fashioned by men that dance around him like a  golden calf, a cheap substitute for the Only True God. He is not the Way that leads a man to God. He is the broad way to destruction. He is not the Truth, for his name is deception. This Jesus cannot give life, he only leads to death.

Let me be clear.  The Jesus Who was sent from Heaven did not come to make you happy – He came to kill you.  We are born as sons of Adam, inheritors of Adam’s sinful nature and as such are corrupt and condemned.  No son of Adam can enter into life because the wages of his sin is death.  Jesus did not come to reform Adam – He came to kill him, to put him to death – and with it Adam’s sin.

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.  For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Romans 6:3-7

Yes friend, Jesus said, “If any man will follow me, let him first deny himself and daily take up his cross……”  The cross Jesus spoke of was not a metaphor, it was not a mould for a piece of jewelry, it was not a decoration on the wall behind a pulpit. The cross of which Jesus spoke had only one purpose: it was an instrument of death

In the Temple, a young Jesus said to His mother, “Do you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?”  Jesus’ business was not to make us happy. HIs business was not to make us prosperous, nor to affirm our sinfulness and perversion. Jesus’ business was not our business — it was His Father’s business and His Father’s business was to restore a fallen race to fellowship with Him.

Jesus came as the Second Adam to kill the first Adam.

Paul said,I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20

Harsh words, hard to hear words, but they are true words.  Jesus came to kill within us that which is of the old nature.

Mortify (put to death) therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: (Colossians 3:5)

The Cross doesn’t give life – the cross takes life.  No life is found at the cross– only death is found at the cross. The Cross kills, it executes, it slays whatever is put upon it. Jesus said to take up our cross; let it put us to death every day – put to death the old nature, the nature of our father Adam who in his own sin condemned us all.

It is the resurrection that gives life, not the cross.  But we cannot take part in the resurrection of Christ without first knowing the cross of Christ. This false Jesus that men fawn over promises a resurrection without the discomfort of death.  This false Jesus promises forgiveness without repentance, cleansing without confession, reformation without transformation, resurrection without a cross.  He is no Christhe is an anti-Christ, a usurper. He is an imposter and he cannot give life because there is no life in him.  Any christ who tells you that you are o.k. just the way you are is a liar. Any savior that tells you that you need not confess your sins, that you need not repent, that you need not mortify the sins of the flesh; any messiah who says you can live in him without entering into his death is a liar and a deceiver and this christ is leading silly men into the abyss.

God spoke to me recently. He gave clear direction to my spirit.  “Speak My truths truthfully.”  I am profoundly moved by this. There are too many lies being told in the Name of Christ; too much false teaching flying under the flag of emerging theology. We must not modify the truths of God in an effort to coddle sinful men; to make God “nicer” so as not to offend sinners.  We dishonor God and we condemn men when we do so.

The atoning work of Christ is free, but it does make incredible demands upon the glad recipients.  Having received the free gift of salvation, the Holy Spirit will immediately begin the task killing the works of the flesh in us, putting to death all that remains of Adam that we might walk in newness of life, attaining to the resurrection of Christ; new creatures from whom everything that is old has passed away and everything before us, new and alive.

Jesus doesn’t want to sober up the drunkard…………He wants to kill him.

He doesn’t want to reform the addict…………..He wants to kill him.

He doesn’t want to re-assign your gender, or turn your sexual orientation…He wants to kill you!

The brawler, the fornicator, the adulterer, the hypocrite, the self-righteous, the bitter, angry, lustful, greedy, murderer or harlot: It is not Jesus’ plan to reform you. He plans to kill you.

Then, through the power of His resurrection, He wants to raise you up to a new life, cleansed by the power of His blood, transformed through the power of His Spirit, no longer dead in your sins – – a wretched, dying son of Adam, but now a son of God.

“But to as many as received Him, He gave the power to become sons of God.”  (John 1:12)

Now, that’s the Jesus I know.

    Thank you, Pastor Gannt.
This is a most powerful truth that needs to be proclaimed from the mountain tops—a convicting message to all of us who claim to know Him.
What a great God! May we fear Him and submit to Him, as such. May we ever become His glory, as we die to ourselves.
